:bulletred: Thank you to the commenters on the previous Ribon Report who explained that "Taranta Ranta" was a sound indicating a dance number or the sound of a trumpet. :)

I ended up skipping the third issue of Ribon, since I was so behind. So this is the review of #4, the April issue. (Curiously, the Ribon issues are released on the first date of the previous month. If you were a dedicated Japanese reader, you would buy your April issue on the first of March.) So what’s new this time?

For one, Fujiwara Yuka has a new series called Dancing Baby Karin. This builds on a one-shot story from Ribon Bikkuri, which recently acquired the new name Ribon Challenge. Karin is part of a team that does dancing routines for fun, and her boy, Yuma, is part of an informal basketball team that plays basketball for fun. When a fight erupts over the use of a hangout spot, Yuma decides that it should be resolved democratically by whoever wins a basketball game. Since the opposing basketball team is manned by gangster types with questionable morals, one of Yuma’s team members is soon out due to injuries. Karin insists that she fill in, and discovers that her dancing talent has given her latent basketball skills.

In Sakai Mayu’s Rockin’ Heaven, Sawa asks herself “What is this feeling??” Readers of Ribon such as ourselves can tell her without a shadow of a doubt that it’s genuine love. This love, of course, is for male main character Ran, who has come over to Sawa’s house with his group for a boisterous study session followed by dinner. Ran’s friend Kido thoughtfully provides a love triangle when he decides that he seriously likes Sawa. We close on a shot of Ran looking alarmed.

Back in Natsumi Matsumoto’s Alice kara Mahou, Arisu has to cope with her crush Rikuto’s dog, Bell, who suddenly has the ability to talk. And in Love Berrish, Yuuya’s group of rejects plan for the upcoming sports competition as a possible opportunity to become friends with their non-reject classmates. Yuuya reveals that she’s very bad at jump-rope, so of course she has to draw it in the event selection. But in this cloud’s silver lining, her love interest Azusa , also draws jump-roping.

Animal Yokochou starts a continuing storyline in response to its popularity as an anime.

Hikaru of Taranta Ranta has to deal with her disappointing former crush Michiya’s kindergarten-level villainy this month when he lies and tells her that new and more worthy crush Jun wants her to wait for him after school. After much sitting by Hikaru and much running around by at least three male characters, Jun ends up inviting Hikaru out for ramen, so the appropriate aphorism here would be all’s well that ends well.

Meanwhile, in Tanemura-sensei’s beautifully drawn Shinshi Doumei Cross, Haine has been kidnapped by her father, and we discover his motivation: Haine’s mother, Maika, has been suffering from memory loss ever since Haine’s father disowned Haine and sent her away. He’s brought Haine back to see if Maika will recognize her daughter and recover her memory. Haine finally sees her mother, but Maika doesn’t remember her. Suddenly, the Student Council members come to break her out of her father’s mansion. Shizumasa tells her how much they need her (to clean).

In Ageha 100% Rin and Riku are found by a teacher and Rin is charged with being Ageha. Riku bravely takes the blame instead. Nevertheless they get into an argument, not to mention Rin still has to leave for New York.

After that Hagi Warako’s series ends, but I have to admit I haven’t been reading that one. In Kitazawa Kaoru’s Ya-ya-yah ga Yattekuru, Kinako and her boy band go back to her native Taishou Era, where they see to it that Kinako ends up marrying the one she loves, not the one she’s engaged to. In Kashinoki Chan’s series, the love triangle…shape…gets yet another angle when the main character’s love interest’s childhood friend shows up. Does this ever happen to you? I’ve also noticed that a disproportionate number of Ribon characters were betrothed to someone by their parents. This makes more sense in the Taishou period, but that’s long past and we’re in the Heisei period now! Also, said parents fail to realize that their child will fall in love with someone else, because nothing’s less romantic than being in love with the person your parents engaged you to (judging from Ribon series). A word of caution to parents in Ribon!

Are there any other phenomena you’ve noticed are more common in Ribon than in real life?

I apologize for the late review! I only bought the February issue in mid-March, unfortunately. I have to go back soon for 3 and 4! Here’s what went on in February:

Maki Youko, creator of Ai Shiteru ze Baby, is starting a new series called Taranta Ranta (does anyone have any idea what this means?). Yay! I’m surprised that Star Blacks ended so soon, though. Anyway, it appears that the Ribon editors told her, “Don’t try anything remotely original for awhile--go back to love triangles and school life.” But since this is Maki Youko, we can expect great art and a gripping plot about love triangles.

The main character of Taranta Ranta is named Hikaru. She misses her dead brother and speaks to him in her mind as she begins her first day of high school. Here she has many ordinary adventures. She becomes fast friends with a girl named Nene, who lets nothing stand in her way and pushes Hikaru to kiss her new crush, Michiya, who reminds her of her brother. (Is this healthy?) He lets her kiss him, which as it turns out is not a good sign. He predictably turns out to be a jerk, whose personality is nothing like Hikaru’s brother’s. Also, Nene is a shoplifter. When Hikaru understandably gets upset about this, Nene gets angry at her and tells her to find another friend. Let’s recap: At the beginning of the chapter, Hikaru acquires one (1) friend and one (1) crush, and near the end of the chapter, she loses (1) friend and one (1) crush and is back where she started. I’m looking forward to the next chapter.

One of Michiya’s more sympathetic friends, who’s been looking disgruntled at Michiya and Hikaru’s adventures throughout the whole chapter, stops to talk to Hikaru. He advises her “Don’t fall in love so easily,” which is the best advice I’ve heard all day and would like to tell a lot of other Ribon characters. However, judging from her facial expression at the end of the chapter as she watches him leave, she’s already failed to follow his suggestion. Presumably this guy is a better option, though. I’d like to note that, despite being only one chapter (that I’ve read), this series has lots of bishounen. Yay!

Meanwhile, Choco Mimi continues to be the cutest thing ever, and Animal Yokochouhas yet another color cover page, probably since it’s now an anime.

Back in Haruta Nana’s Love Berrish (and if anyone knows what language “berrish” is from, or if its just a hybrid English word, please let me know), main character Yuuya thinks that her love interest Azusa and her friend Ame have something romantic going on. Ame tells her they aren’t dating or anything, but there’s still half a chapter to fill, so Yuuya keeps worrying. Finally, Ame promises to explain everything.
Sakai Mayu’s Rockin’ Heaven has its second chapter, in which Sawa insists that her unmotivated class participate in a school competition. The slackers’ ringleader, Ran, sets the condition that if Sawa sews all the numbers onto the backs of the basketball uniforms they use, he’ll have the class participate. Needless to say, Sawa accepts.

Shinshi Doumei Cross has a cute and lovingly detailed cover of Haine and Shizumasa. (Shizumasa B, nisemono, I‘m guessing.) Haine is upset because she had a falling-out with Shizumasa and has now quit the Platinums. Also, the school newspaper (why are Ribon school journalists always opportunistic annoyances?) has a picture of her and Shizumasa A (honmono) kissing on the front page. Fortunately, she and Maguri have an unlikely alliance, and he defends her. Shizumasa A (honmono) is sick in bed, angsting and/or plotting.

Matsumoto Natsumi, whose new series is Alice kara Magic, still loves plaid. This chapter, Arisu has to save her friend Ayano, who has absorbed a piece of jewelry and is experiencing weightlessness and personality changes.

In Hoikuen e Ikou! the main character Kokoa and her beloved Mahiro go on dates with the wrong people, i.e., not each other. Five little kids secret themselves in the back of Takamizawa-kun’s car, intending to stop his and Kokoa’s date. Small children instinctively know who should be dating who. Needless to say, sneaking around after Kokoa wasn’t a good idea on the part of the children, and so at one point Kokoa has to make a spectacular leap to save one of them from a car.

Let’s see…in Ageha 100% Rin bravely applies makeup, but Ageha’s magic does not work. Then she gets a call from her mother saying she should come to New York.

Rest assured that other things happen, but I feel that’s a pretty good summary for now. I won’t cover every single series.

:bulletblue: Monthly Ribon Report :bulletblue:

Since I, *Kumorinoko, have been slacking off somewhat in helping maintain this club, I've decided to contribute by writing a monthly report about the latest Ribon. I'll keep everyone updated on what series are ending, what series are starting, and any import developments (but no spoilers) in ongoing series.
Does this sound like a good idea? A bad idea? Let me know if you're interested or uninterested.

In the latest issue of Ribon, namely January 2006, two new series by high-profile artists have started. The first is Arisu kara Mahou (Magic from Alice) by Matsumoto Natsumi, who finished up Saint Dragon Girl Miracle not too long ago. Her new series is an Alice in Wonderland-themed magical girl series that looks like fun. The basic theme is that Asahina Arisu, a budding fortune teller, is approached by a talking rabbit who needs to recover the treasures of his Queen, since they fell to earth in a shower of what Arisu and company thought were shooting stars. Did I mention that these star-like jewels can be absorbed by people's hearts and cause strange effects? I'm looking forward to seeing where this series will go.
Also, Sakai Mayu (who just finished Peter Pan Syndrome) started a new school life series called Rockin' Heaven. Our main character, Sawa, transfer to a new school...which turns out to be a former boy's school that just went coed. Sawa befriends the only other girl in her class, an aspiring manga artist who transfered because she thought it would "make a good topic for a manga." Then, of course, they tangle with the most powerful boy in school and his disruptive friends. Sawa won't take any of their attitude, and ends up with her shoes thrown in the pool...
Meanwhile, the plot Haruta Nana's Love Berrish, which looked promising in the first couple chapters, has degenerated into what I call "blah blah love triangles blah." (These reports are likely to contain my personal opinions. I apologize in advance.)

In other news, we hereby declare this post a...

NEWS</u<

In the October issue, Maguro-sensei released two chapters of her new manga, though I'm having trouble translating it. ^^;; It's P*Enjiru, I think. Regardless to title, it's very funny and cute, and I'm going to try and take a couple digital pictures of it for everyone to see. Also, Wataru-sensei has a new one out (I don't know if it already is or not, I only get the even numbered issues), and I don't know the title... ^^;; but be on the look out for it!

POLL:

Results for last poll:

Which of these series would you like to see an oncore release of? The majority said Kodocha! ^^

New Poll:

If the Ribon anthropology came in only one color of ink, which one would you want to see everything in?

~Red
~Green
~Purple
~I'd like to see rainbow ink...
~Screw it all. I say black.
